On 20th July 2024, I played in a 5aside football tournament near Hoxton in London. My team lost the first game, drew the second and then won the third one from the group.
Because we were tied on points for second place, this went to a sudden death penalty shootout. We lost the shootout and as a result 4 teams went into the ‘Champions League’ and the other 4 teams including mine dropped into the ‘Europa League.’
In the Europa League was a semi final and final. My team won and got a trophy and I was nominated for best Goalkeeper of the tournaments. This event had been planned two months in advance. It was a really good Saturday morning and afternoon.
The event organiser, my distant relative, said over the past 5 years, I’ve been on the team that has won the tournament, I laughed and said I just wanted to be reminded of the once in a lifetime Prague final win when I was there in the fanzone.
It also made me think about skills like quick reactions, relying on a mixture of instinct, detection, and gut feel even after the couple of years I had not played.
Although never again before I become a goalkeeper will I have two cookies with porridge along with Lucozade as my actual “gut feel” was bloating in the first few games. Throughout the whole week before the Saturday, I had switched to vegetarian cooked food for breakfast.
